I’ve got a new addition added to my kit, my drum kit that is. I also have two other new toys to talk about once they get here. Darn the US postal service, they are painfully slow. None the less for a long time I’ve wanted a remote hi hat for my drum set. Ever since I witnessed Benny Greb killin’ his x-hat as he calls them I knew I had to have one. Just check out the video of Greb in action after the words. Now in a perfect world I would have got the Pearl Eliminator remote hats but there was a great deal on Craigslist for DW 5000 hats. I’ve never used DW’s pedals so I thought it was worth a try. I can always sell them and get the Eliminators if I wanted. As you can see here I have my regular hats to the left, A Custom Mastersound. Then on the x-hats I’ve got A Custom Quick Beats. Both are 14″ for right now, but someday I’d prefer to have a 12″ on the x-hats. One day I’ll have Greb’s Cymbal setup. Here is a shot of where I’ve put my x-hat. It’s a great and relaxed position for my right hand.

So far I’ve had a lot of fun using the x-hats, I used them this morning in church and have been practicing with them for the last two nights. I’ll give you my two favorite reasons for having a pair of x-hats.
Number 1; A new position for your hats. The standard hat position is alright but it crosses your arm over and away from a lot of your set. This requires some quick movements to get to the whole right side of your set. You could get x-hats with the same set of hats just to have an easier reach to the rest of your set. I’ve even thought that I could do without having my standard hats to my left and place something new there, what would I place there though? I don’t know, you guys give me some ideas on that.
Number 2; A different sounding hat. If you’ve ever wanted some beefy hats for a playing during a rocking chorus, then a more crisp hat for verses then this would work great. If you are like me and want to go for a little more experimental sound with your x-hats, then that’s a great reason to have them as well. Below you can now see all the pedals at the disposal of my left foot. My right still has the single bass pedal.

If there are other drummers out there speak up and tell me about your setup. Do you use an x-hat? and if so how do you use yours? What kind of pedals do you have at your feet? Thanks for reading and leave a comment! Here’s Benny’s video.
